Lesson 3
HW - Short Essay
Single Broom Maker OR Broom Manufacturing Company
For my broom I will not be using a broom manufacturing company. I want to get back to the roots of broom making and the single designer! I know that they often faced the problem of not being able to meet the demand for their broom, but I am not worried about that. My broom will be a limited edition and therefore only 10-12 will be produced. Most of these will go directly to RQT'ers so the demand problem won't be much of an issue. Plus, I really want to have the creative freedom that comes from working individually and not with a big company.
For what Primary Purpose will the Broomstick be Used
My broom with obviously be used for Quidditch! I know you are probably falling out of your chair from shock right now due to that last statement! My love of quidditch and the desire to have a new and unique broom for RQT will be the main reasons I am setting out to make such a broom. It could also be used for quick travel, but it wouldn't be recommended. Wizarding speeding tickets are not a fun thing to deal with! That darn Wizengamot!
What Material you Use for the Handle and the Twigs
Obviously I would want the best materials for my broom! Therefore I would set out to create an ash and oak blend for the broom. By doing so, my broom would be both fast and able to endure RQT games and practices! Copying the Firebolt, my broom would also have birch twigs. Since I would be making so few brooms, I would have each broom custom fit for its intended player. The weight of the player would be taken into considertion when determining the thickness of the broom. The minimum amount that would allow the broom to function properly and carry the player would be used.
What Other Features you Want for your Broomstick
I would copy several features from other brooms such as the anti-jinx farnish, unbreakable braking charm, and fast excelleration. I would also add a few new features. One would be a "practice mode" button. When this button is pressed the broom becomes heavier and slower. That way when RQT is practicing, they will get used to the extra effort it takes to move the broom, but once a game comes around, that extra effort would just make them all that much faster. I would also add custom buttons for each of the players. Edmund's would have a hook for his high heels. Charz's would have a storage compartment for books. Pavel's would have a portable whiteboard for doing math mid-air! You get the idea!
What the Name of the Broom IsWhen naming my broom I would like to incorporate my name and a year that is important to me. I decided to go with my last name, Adderholt. The year was a bit harder to pick out. However, since the broom is so connected with me being RQT captain I decided to go with that. I then set out to find a word that would fit with both of these requirements. Therefore I present to you the Astraddle Nine. Astraddle meaning to straddle something like you would a broom. It also has "add" in it which is the beginning of Adderholt! As above those letters would be emphasized in the name. The nine comes from 2009, the year I became RQT captain!

Single Broom Maker OR Broom Manufacturing Company
I will be creating my very own broom making company. I will create exclusive broomsticks that will be examples of art, of beauty, of durability. Expensive broomsticks which will be worth every galleon spent on it. I will make broomsticks that will be heirlooms of quality and prestige. These broomsticks that are made will be like the finest crafted works of art in the wizarding world -- something that anyone can own as long as they come up with the money for it. Their name will be synonymous with goodness, quality and good use. Much like the Rolls Royce or the Mercedes Benz of the Muggle world. This will be the Mercedes Benz of broomsticks.
For what Primary Purpose will the Broomstick be Used
This broomstick will be used primarily for travel. This is not a gaming broomstick because it is a little less quick to respond to the wishes of the flyer. This is a sturdy broomstick of quality controls and quick reactions but not something that will list to the side if a person gets a little doozy and/or tired. This broomstick will be actually sturdy enough to carry two people without diminishing its speed in the least. A fast broom, capable of travelling 140 mph and gaining that speed within 20 seconds, even loaded double, this broom will be the broom of choice for a witch (or wizard) who wants to have the best.
What Material you Use for the Handle and the Twigs
It's a secret. Okay, well, the handle is going to be made of a combination of mahogany and bamboo. Why bamboo? Well, we all know the qualities of mahogany. It is sturdy, durable and it takes into it a multitude of charms and retains them well. The bamboo will be an inlay on the actual broomstick and then bamboo twigs will be intermixed with the ash twigs of the tail. Bamboo is a very resilient material. It will help the mahogany's ability to absorb weather conditions, abrupt changes of temperature and certainly it will help with any temperamental collisions that might happen with other broomsticks.
What Other Features you Want for your Broomstick
Of course I want the regular features that other companies tote for their brooms. But mine will be better. The charms will be enhanced and the mahogany and bamboo will make sure that they STICK! However, my broomstick has, first and foremost, an improved version of the cushioning charm. If you have seen an english saddle (a saddle used for riding horses, for jumping and/or dressage), you will notice that they look VERY comfortable. A padded seat, stirrup leaters and irons so that your legs and feet are supported and you can use those stirrups to balance with and gain a bit more security on your broomstick. So the first improvement for my broomstick, along with the to-be-expected qualities of speed and function that all broomsticks share, is a quality of COMFORT. Secondly, my broomstick will have a built-in bubble charm with temperature control. Raining? Laugh at it! A little cold? Just mention the 'words' to the charm and you will travel in comfort and ease. Third, and maybe most important, I have developed an independent guidance system into the broomstick. It will have warning bells and whistles in case the person flying falls asleep on an extended journey BUT in the meantime, it will be able to continue on the plotted course, avoiding other traffic and then be able to touch down in a good place, hovering 2 feet above the ground, until the person wakes up and is able to continue in flight by themself. A fourth benefit is that with the mix of mahogany and bamboo, this broom will be virtually indestructable.
What the Name of the Broom Is
My broom is called The Merc. This is an awesome broom, a broom able to change the shape of broomsticks to come. No more will witches fly into danger every time they mount their broomstick to go someplace. The name will be reminiscent of the Muggle car, without actually saying anything that connection will be made. There will be the potential to alter the broomstick in little ways to allow for 2 passengers, to allow for flights of several thousand miles, to allow for the fulfillment of every witch and wizard to own one. It will never be outdated and it will outlast all the Firebolts and Nimbus brooms currently in use by hundreds of years.

I have decided that I will pursue a career as a single broom maker. As the things currently stand, I do not hold the required finances to support or even create a whole company. I also do not possess any land, nor do I have connections to get to a decent number of good broom makers to work for me. Furthermore, I like working on my own, not being rushed or told what to do by someone above me, so I definitely won't accept working for someone else. The idea of having the freedom to do as I will and find fitting is what appeals me, so therefore I believe becoming a single broom maker would be the best choice for me. If nothing else, I at least want to start like this, and if things go great then I can always consider starting my own company.
Personally, I'm not much of a fan of flying and believe it should be done strictly for traveling purposes and not sports. And seeing how I'll be working as a single broom maker, I don't think I could deal with the high demands for sports brooms. Because of these reasons the broomstick I'm thinking of would be something that would center on safety and the ability to travel longer and higher distances rather than to be able to achieve monstrous speeds. Plus, I think a traveling broom doesn't require as much attention as a sports broom as it doesn't need to be that fast and fine, it just needs safety and endurance. It's mostly charm work rather than broom work.
Seeing how we're talking about a traveling broom, I believe it would be more suitable to use bigger materials and make the broom somewhat larger than sports brooms. It should have enough space and strength to support at least five people. And since I'm aiming for a broom with superb endurance, it is only logical that I would create the broom's handle out of oak. For the twigs, if I can get a hold of birch twigs then that's what I'd definitely go with, but as they're rarer and more expensive, I'd just go with anything decent. I'd rather pay more attention to the quality of the material rather than the type of material anyway.
Feature-wise, the first and most important feature for this broomstick would be the number of riders it supports and I'm aiming for five people. Then, the next thing that comes to find is the comfort. Traveling long distances is no good unless the broom is comfortable enough so that your butt doesn't get sore from the ride, and therefore I'd make sure to implement a cushioning charm on the broom. Last, but not least, I would add an invisibility charm that will activate when the broom is in the air and at least 20 feet high. This way, wizards and witches can travel as they please and as long as they please without worrying about being seen by muggles. And the requirement for the broom to be actually flying in the air and be 20 feet off the ground is so that you don't accidentally lose it somewhere.
While the name of my broom is still a process in work, as I'm not fully sure what I'm going with, I do have a good choice in mind: Crystal Chariot. The 'Chariot' part points out that the broom is designed for family use and that it can carry more than one person at a time. It would also imply that, as chariots in history, isn't as fast as some other transport devices because it focuses more on reliability and support than on speed. The 'Crystal' part should tell people that this broom is of high quality, strong and sharp. It also means that it provides luxury in the way of comfort, and that it's a strong broom with great endurance level. All in all, I think it's quite a brilliant name, even though it may sound a bit unusual for a broom.
